“BhartiAirtel is the largest telecom operator in the country in terms of subscriber base. With addition of 1.26 million new users, Airtel has now 191 million subscribers in the country as on June 2013.”

In a recent reportreleased by theCellular Operators Association of India (COAI) reveals that the total number of GSM subscribers in India has reached to 671.13 million. Recorded on June 2013, this growth report on subscriber base also indicates 0.54% growth increment since the previous month. In this huge success, BhartiAirtel plays a key role, which leads the race by accumulating 1.26 million new subscribers into its wide base of 190.91 million happy callers. COAI also confirms that the UP East circle has managed to get the largest base of GSM subscribers with 60.03 million satisfied customers.

On the victory stand, second stands Vodafone that has managed to add 0.35 million subscribers in its user base in June 2013. After the increment in growth, Vodafone now has a customer base of 155 million. Next comes, India’s third largest GSM service provider Idea Cellular that has increase its user base to 125 million by adding 1.21 million new subscribers in June 2013. Though the state-run telecom service provider BSNL hadn’t seen any growth increment in the recent past, yet it is celebrated as the fourth largest GSM operator with a subscriber base of 97 million.

Giving a tight fight to the leaders, Aircel has managed to grab the fifth position with 61 million users by adding 0.61 million new subscribers to the line. While veteran telecom operators are ruling the market, young entities like Uninor and Videocon are not far behind in the race. Where Uninor has added 0.3 million to its base by increasing it to 32 million, there Videocon has also increased its subscriber base to 2 million after adding 0.13 million users to it.

Though there is no mention of CDMA customer base in the report presented by COAI, yet the recent TRAI figures denote that it is declining. In March 2013 the subscriber base was 867.80

The tech-savvy& internet freakgeneration Y’s inclination towards smartphone and tablets has opened up a new market probability for the telecom operators.  To stay a step ahead in the telecom industry, Reliance Communication has taken a new initiative that is to cut down its 3G data tariffs by 50% almost. These halve priced 3G data packs are now as cheap as 2G packs and are available in both postpaid and prepaid plans. By doing this, Reliance is looking forward to grab 40% of these tablet and smartphone subscriber base, which wants to enjoy fast yet feasible internet experience. The existing 2G users will be automatically moved to the new 3G plan if they use 3G enabled handsets.

Simply-Reliance2

In the recent past, Reliance Communication has slashed the charges for pay per use 3G data by 1 paisa per 10 KB, which is much cheaper than the charges offered by the other contenders. Now, the new 3G packs are available at Rs.123 for 1 GB, Rs.246 for 2 GB and Rs.492 for 4 GB. Apart from that, new connection holders, who are coming through MNP to the Reliance network, are also facilitated with free 1 GB 3G data per month for two months. Now the question arises whether it will mark the beginning of price war among the telecom operators. Rerch analyst ResHimanshu Shah, institutional team, HDFC securities limited, says “We don’t foresee RCom’s rate reduction to have material impact on other telcos due to poor perception of brand and service of RCom and also because of its inferior 3G network presence.” According to Mr. Shah, there is no hint of rivals following the trend of rate cutting for 3G packs.

But the current market trend and strategies made by the other leading operators showing that a tough competition between the telecom operators is going to take place in near future. Inspite of having a negative brand perception, yet RCom’s infrastructure has a positive impact on the subscribers. In the places where network coverage and speed are better, there RCom is offering 21Mbps speed in comparison with 7.2 Mbps speed offered by the other operators. So it is obvious that to compete in the market with Reliance, other veteran operators like Airtel, Tata Docomo, Vodafone and Idea Cellular will leave no stone unturned. Already these companies have reduced the base rates in some packs and promised to bring forth beneficial offers for the users. These operators will sure to woo their subscribers by offering a reduced rate in their 3G packs with improved brand perception in the coming time.

New 3G Plans: Our Conclusion

Though we welcome the 3G plans with reduced rate offered by the telecom operators, yet the announcement of automatic up-gradation from 2G to 3G packs by Reliance Communication worries us. Apparently it seems beneficial, but in deep inside there are probabilities of more expense as 3G consumes more data quickly than 2G. So, we will advise people to be alert of the fact and those who use data only for checking mails and minimal internet browsing, should switch off the 3G network in their handsets. Otherwise, smartphone users may also set the data limits in the data counter, available with every smartphone, so as to avoid overspending.

Inspite of the negative aspect that we see in the announcement made by Rcom, yet the reduced pay per use 3G rate, which is 1p/10KB & 1Re/1MB, is the positive side no doubt. Assumption says, it will help in creating more revenue for the company as well as increase the subscriber base. Further, this move by RCom will also inspire other operators to alter their data rates, which will be beneficial for subscribers of all networks.
